Lisbon, Portugal World Biotech Tour 2015

Recruitment

The ambassador recruitment at the Pavilion of Knowledge was conducted in a “FameLab” style, meaning students presented a biotech topic on stage for 3 minutes in front of a panel of judges and public audience. Students with the top scores moved on to a biotech training day at the museum after which there were asked to apply for the WBT ambassador program.

Two of the ambassadors were able to travel with the WBT to the European Commission and European Union to advocate for the global program with government officials and science centers in Belgium.

Training and Exchanges

Ambassadors studied and developed presentations for their biotech topics. During this time, ASTC hosted several online exchanges between the ambassadors so that the students from different countries could meet and learn from each other. Exchanges included science communication exercises, Q&A, and updates on the WBT events and activities occurring at each site.

On the third day of the festival, the World Biotech Tour went to Time Out’s Mercado da Ribeira, a public market and food place in the heart of Lisbon. The pop up festival focused on biotech related to food, eating, and the mouth to show visitors how biotech can be found in a market environment. Activities included the PTC taste test, Take a Cellfie, Algae ice cream, and genetically modified rice and grains.
